Who Can Benefit from Dental Sedation?

Experts recommend that everyone visit a dentist for a cleaning and check-up at least twice a year – once every six months. Many, however, do not accomplish this out of fear. Some patients are adverse to the discomfort and pain that can result during an appointment, which others are simply weary of the unknown, as they do not know if they will receive bad news regarding the condition of their teeth. For these patients we recommend dental sedation.

There are four different types of dental sedation:

  • Minimal sedation, which leaves the patient relaxed
  • Moderate sedation is also known as conscious sedation, and makes patients a bit loopy
  • Deep sedation leaves patients at the edge of consciousness, but still able to be awakened if needed
  • And general anesthesia, which causes complete unconsciousness

Dental sedation is useful for many different types of patients, not only those with dental phobia. It can also be used for those with a low pain thresh hold, highly sensitive teeth, a bad gag reflex, younger patients who cannot sit still in the dentist’s chair for a long period of time, or need a large amount of dental work completed.

Our Orange County dentists are qualified to administer dental sedatives both orally or intravenously. Talk to our sedation dentist in Orange County if you believe you could benefit from this option.
