When is Gum Surgery the Right Treatment Option?

As a first step measure for treating the beginning stages of gum disease, scaling and root planing is usually the recommended course of action. This is a non-surgical procedure, but mild sedation may be given. Scaling consists of scraping away the plaque and tartar that rests above and below the gum line. Root planing is when our expert in periodontics in Los Angeles scrapes away the bacteria that have collected at the root of your tooth. Doing so creates a smooth surface for your gums to reattach better to your teeth.

If scaling-and-root planing proves to be ineffective, or if you are too far advanced in your gum disease, then surgery may be necessary in order to remove the harmful pockets of bacteria that have been created as a result. Flap surgery involves our dentist lifting back the gums to remove the tartar that has accumulated. If your gum disease is severe, bone loss may also have occurred in your jaw. In this case, a bone graft may need to be performed as a way to encourage tooth stability. Receding gums is another hallmark of gum disease. Our dentist may need to perform a gum graft if yours have receded past the point where your gums are able to support your teeth.
