When is Dental Bonding Used?

Dental bonding is a procedure in which tooth-colored resin is applied to teeth using a high-intensity curing light. In most cases, dental bonding is used for cosmetic reasons, but our dentist in Santa Clara may recommend dental bonding for other purposes as well, such as filling a cavity or protecting exposed roots.

You may be a candidate for dental bonding if you have:
Decayed teeth
Chipped or cracked teeth
Discolored teeth
Teeth with gaps
Short, abnormally small or misshapen teeth
A receding gum line that has left roots exposed

In most cases, we can complete the dental bonding procedure in a single appointment. Unless the tooth is decayed, you may not even need an anesthetic. An etching liquid is painted onto the tooth to roughen its surface followed by a special conditioning liquid, which primes the surface of the tooth for a more secure bond. Once the right shade of composite resin has been chosen, it will be applied to the tooth, shaped, trimmed and polished to match the tooth.
