When is Crown Lengthening Recommended?

Crown lengthening is a procedure usually performed by a periodontist. Crown lengthening is often performed for cosmetic reasons, but also for clinical purposes. Here is a look at the times in which our dentist in Northridge might recommend a crown lengthening treatment.

Cosmetic Purposes

Many patients have what they and others would call a “gummy smile,” where when they smile they show a lot of gums. While many people believe that this might be because they have small teeth, it is more likely that they just have gums that cover more of the crown of the tooth than normal. Crown lengthening can be performed to expose more of the tooth, giving them a broader, less gummy smile.

Clinical Purposes

The other reason people get it done is so that they can get better dental care. If a tooth is cracked, needs to have root canal therapy, or is next to a missing tooth that needs a bridge, crown lengthening may be needed. This is because the top of the tooth, known as the crown, is what will support the artificial dental crown or the bridge. If not enough of it is exposed, the restoration may not work. So the teeth are more fully exposed to make that possible.
