When are Braces the Best Option?
Our patients who visit us here at our office are often looking for guidance and help with understanding their various dental needs. Occasionally a patient will ask us how they would know if braces are best for them. This question is surprisingly common.
There are a number of reasons braces are the best choice for you. Some indicators that you should consider braces are:
• CROWDED TEETH- One of the most common causes for patient consultations with our dentists is crowded teeth. This is typically a hereditary condition and most often affects the patient’s bottom teeth. Braces can adjust the teeth, but sometimes a tooth is pulled to allow room for the crowded teeth. Although some patients believe that getting braces for overcrowded teeth is cosmetic, crowded teeth make it difficult to brush and floss adequately. They also provide places for bacteria, plaque, and tarter to collect.
• GAPS- Also known as, malocclusions, gaps between the upper and lower teeth are a reason for patients to consider braces. It is essential for your oral health that your jaws fit together correctly. Malocclusions can lead to exposed gum tissue which is vulnerable to bacteria and ultimately periodontal disease.
• BITE PROBLEMS- In this instance, the term ‘bite’ means how your upper teeth and lower teeth meet when your mouth closes. When you are resting your upper and lower teeth should not touch. However, more than 70 percent of the population have incorrect bites. In many cases, patients choose to do nothing, but correcting a bit problem with braces can prevent problems later in life.
In some cases, a severe malocclusion can lead to jaw pain, headaches, speech impairments, and difficulty chewing. These issues should be brought to our dentist’s attention as soon as possible, so he can begin a care plan to correct the problems.
If you are unhappy with your teeth when you look in the mirror, consider speaking with a braces dentist in San Francisco. During a consultation, you can ask questions and get information to help make a decision regarding braces. Occasionally, patients with minor misalignment choose to wait on braces or skip braces altogether. The best choice is always the informed choice.
