When a Dental Extraction is Necessary?

A dental extraction is necessary when your dentist is unable to repair your tooth with a crown, filling, or other restorative technique. An extraction may not sound like the most preferable idea to many patients, but in every case it will work to benefit your oral health in the long run.

Reasons dental extractions are necessary:

  • Trauma suffered by tooth, causing a crack or a break
  • Overcrowding
  • Infected
  • Abscessed
  • Periodontal disease that results in not enough support for tooth
  • Damage due to bruxism
  • Baby teeth that fail to fall out on their own
  • Wisdom teeth removal

Some teeth may be easily removable; other not so much. There are two types of dental extractions: simple and surgical. It can be determined through x-ray which type the removal of your tooth requires. At times, however, a predicted simple extraction can turn into a surgical one, for example, if your tooth breaks during the procedure. The removal of wisdom teeth can often require a surgical extraction, as they can be impacted and fail to break through the gums.
