What Makes Lumineers Different from Veneers

Dental veneers can be used to effectively mask gapped, crooked, discolored, and chipped teeth. Lumineers are a special kind of dental veneer. Lumineers are used for the exact same purpose as veneers, but there is one key difference: the level of preparation required.

Traditional dental veneers require that our Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist shave off a very thin layer of enamel from the surface of your tooth in order to be placed. The amount is usually around a half a millimeter, which roughly matches the size of the veneer itself. Failure to do this step will result in an overly bulky finished product. Lumineers require no preparation of the teeth in order to be placed. This means that no enamel needs to be removed in order to receive Lumineers. The main reason for this is because Lumineers are made from an ultra-thin type of porcelain.

Due to the removal of enamel, veneers are irreversible. It is technically possible to have the veneers removed, but you will still be lacking the enamel that you used to have. The only real solution is to have a new set of veneers placed. With Lumineers, you can change your mind about the procedure at any time. Getting Lumineers removed just leaves you with the natural teeth you had before the Lumineers were placed.
