Tongue pain is a vague symptom that can have many causes. If your tongue is hurting, you may not be able to eat comfortably, and even speech can become difficult. Our dentist in Huntington Beach can help. We can determine why your tongue hurts and help you get it back to normal.

Common causes of tongue pain include:

1. An injury
Biting your tongue or burning it on too-hot foods or drinks can cause quite a bit of pain. These injuries usually heal quickly, but if the pain continues, you may need additional treatment.

2. Oral thrush
Thrush is a type of yeast infection that occurs in the mouth. Along with pain, you may notice that your tongue or other tissues look white or coated. Antifungal medications will be needed to address this type of infection.

3. Ulcers
Oral ulcers are associated with hormone changes, smoking, certain foods, stress and oral injuries. They generally heal on their own, but if the ulcers occur regularly or do not heal, you may benefit from additional testing.

Other causes of tongue pain can include vitamin deficiencies, burning tongue, a viral infection, lichen planus or certain medications. Call us to learn more or to schedule an appointment with our expert in treatment of tongue pain in Huntington Beach.
