Among the various fields of dentistry is Periodontics. This focus deals with the gums, which can become infected and inflamed in a few different ways. There are two types of gum disease – gingivitis (mild), and periodontitis (severe). A periodontist is concerned with the prevention, treatment, and management of gum disease.

Symptoms of gum disease include:
•    redness
•    puffiness
•    swelling
•    pockets forming above the teeth
•    bad breath
•    tenderness
•    tooth ache
•    and in some cases, tooth loss

There are many different treatments and procedures periodontists use to address gum disease. A scaling and root planing involves removing plaque from just at and just under the gum line. If this treatment is not successful, a pocket reduction is normally performed next. Pockets of plaque are reduced and inflammation tends to go down. Other procedures include gum flap surgery and tissue grafting.
