Treatments for Gum Recession

Gum recession commonly occurs with age, but it is not necessarily a result of the aging process. In most cases, gum recession is caused by misaligned teeth, bruxism, dental trauma, genetic factors, aggressive brushing, or gum disease. As gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, it exposes the roots of the teeth. The roots are not only more sensitive than the teeth; they also have less natural protection against decay, which means that they can erode or develop cavities more easily especially once they are exposed. Eventually, the teeth can become so damaged as a result of gum recession that they fall out or must be extracted.

If you have a receding gum line, our Northridge dentist may recommend gum grafting. Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that is used to restore lost gum tissue and protect the roots of teeth. Donor tissue or synthetic materials are attached to the existing gums, and the natural tissues are stimulated. In some cases, a pocket reduction surgery may be needed to tighten the periodontal pockets, which keeps the roots of teeth better protected.
