Gum disease affects nearly everyone at some point. How severe it gets can depend largely on you. Staying on a dental schedule is your No. 1 defense. Our dentist in West Hollywood can clean your teeth in ways you can’t. But not everyone has dental insurance. There are ways to defend yourself at home. If you don’t, your gum disease problem can get ugly.
Brushing and flossing are mandatory. You should also be using anti-microbial mouth rinses, prescription-grade if possible. Some are available over the counter.
Oil pulling is a popular at-home gum disease treatment. Rinse your mouth with sesame or coconut oil, and try to keep it in your mouth for at least 15 minutes per session. Avoid swallowing. Myrrh is also good as a rinse, especially when combined with salt water.
You know you have gum disease if you have any of the following symptoms: persistent bad breath, a persistent bad taste, bleeding or tender gums, and loose teeth. The last one is a sign you’ve left things a bit late, as tooth and bone loss are at the extreme end of untreated gum disease.
