Taking Care of Teeth with Fillings

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world, so it is no surprise that so many people have dental fillings. Although dental fillings do represent a permanent change in the structure of your teeth, taking care of restored teeth is not much different than taking care of your natural teeth. Our cosmetic dentist in Santa Clara can demonstrate the best way to take care of your smile.

  1. Brush carefully.
Brushing twice a day removes plaque and debris from the food you eat. Use a soft-bristled brush so that you don’t damage the filling or your teeth and fluoride toothpaste to strengthen the enamel on your teeth. Brush especially careful along the border between the tooth and the filling.
  1. Floss daily.
Flossing removes plaque from areas the brush cannot reach. Floss between each set of teeth, being sure to scrape up the sides of each tooth to remove as much debris as possible.
  1. Use your teeth properly.
Chewing on hard or non-food items like fingernails or ice can damage both your teeth and restorations. Use your teeth only to talk, smile and eat a balanced diet, and both they and your restorations will last longer.
