Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is a problem which we often see in our office. Periodontitis is a serious disorder which causes you to lose teeth if no professional intervention takes place.

Our periodontist in Tarzana frequently treats patients struggling with gum disease. Often, they had no idea a significant disorder was developing. Periodontal disease is a quiet disease that usually does not have attention-grabbing symptoms; however, there are warning signs that you could have gum disease.

• Gums that are red, tender, and swollen are an early sign that should alert you to the possibility of gum disease.
• Bleeding gums while you are brushing your teeth or immediately after brushing indicate gum disease.
• Teeth that are slightly loose or teeth that have moved somewhat into another position are problematic. Healthy teeth and gums stay firmly in place.
• Pockets between your teeth and gums are a sign of periodontal disease and also a way our Tarzana dentist gauges the severity of gum disease.
• Gum disease could cause a noticeable change in how partial dentures, bridges, or other dental work fits in your mouth.
• Seeing that your gums are receding is another telltale sign of periodontal problems.
• Frequently having bad tastes in your mouth which are not caused by recent food or drink is a strong indication of gum disease.
• If you have chronic bad breath that lasts even after you have brushed, flossed, and used mouth rinse you may have periodontitis.

If you notice some or all of these symptoms, contact our office so we can make an appointment for you. It is always best to allow our dentist to determine the source of your dental issues. Here are some ways our dentist diagnoses periodontitis.

• Gum bleeding or sensitivity
• Deep pockets of space between your teeth and gums. (In a healthy mouth the gums are flat against the surface of the teeth.)
• Jawbone deterioration

The good news is that periodontal disease is treatable, especially when caught in its early stages. If you notice any symptoms, do not delay in seeking treatment.
