Signs of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that seriously affects the health of patients. Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the throat become too relaxed during sleep, blocking off air from entering the system. This causes many effects, both during sleep and waking hours. These are common signs of patients with sleep apnea.

At night:

The most well-known symptom of sleep apnea is snoring. This occurs due to the vibrations caused by the small amounts of air attempting to get through the throat. Holding the breath and then gasping for air are also common. The brain will slightly wake up, possibly hundreds of times a night, in order to take in large amounts of air. Other common signs are getting up frequently to go to the bathroom and insomnia.

During the day:

Sleep apnea possibly has more symptoms during waking hours. Patients may experience headaches in the morning, irritability, and moodiness. The need for energy might instigate cravings for sugary and fatty foods, which naturally leads to weight gain.
