Root Canal Aftercare

Root canal treatments are used to remove diseased soft tissues from the root canals of teeth. Our dentist in Hollywood will explain the best aftercare to reduce your risk of complications and help you heal.

Some simple guidelines include:

1. Diet
Your mouth could remain numb for an hour or two. Avoid drinking anything hot or cold or chewing until the numbness has worn off. Once feeling has returned, you will need to continue to avoid eating on the treated tooth until it has been restored.

2. Swelling
Some swelling can occur after any treatment. This will typically be short-lived and self-limiting. Compresses can help.

3. Discomfort
Your tooth or jaw may be tender after treatment. This can be more noticeable if the infection was severe. If you were prescribed antibiotics, use them exactly as recommended. Brush and floss carefully, and rinse daily using warm salt water.

After any root canal treatment, the tooth will need to be permanently restored. This will generally include the placement of a crown. The crown protects the tooth from further damage and infection and can help it stay strong and functional for years.
