Purpose of Periodontal Treatments

Periodontists work to save your gums from recession and infection. They are highly trained in the soft tissues, and perform a variety of tasks to make sure all the biophysical relationships inside your mouth go according to plan. Here are three common periodontal treatments by our Beverly Hills dentists, and the purpose of each.

Scaling and root planing

This procedure is maybe the most universal, and is meant to insure you against future periodontal problems. The teeth are literally scraped with a special tool to rid them of plaque and calculus. Any periodontal pockets you have will be cleaned, along with the tooth root itself.

Gum graft surgery

If you are suffering from dire gum recession, you may require a gum graft. The periodontist would move tissue from your soft palate or elsewhere to your gums, using it as incentive against further recession. This helps to cover exposed roots and protect them from decay.

Dental Implants

The loss of just a single tooth can cause problems for the rest if the space is left unattended. Sensing the absence, teeth tend to move toward each other. Implants are becoming the most popular form of tooth restoration, as the combination of titanium root and porcelain prosthetic replace the tooth in a healthy, attractive way. Dental implants are a surgical procedure, usually conducted in two or three different stages. They also usually require a periodontist.
