Purpose of Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are an important part of any dental examination. While your dentist will absolutely perform a visual examination of your mouth during your visit, there are certain areas of the mouth that cannot be see with the naked eye alone. X-rays allow dentists to see these hidden elements.
Some of the areas that are being referred to are decay between teeth or below the gumline, wisdom teeth that have not yet erupted, or problems that may be plaguing the jawbone. Tumors, cysts, abscesses, and bone changes may be linked to certain diseases like gum disease and oral cancer, and it is important for our LA dentists to know about these changes as early as possible. Many dental conditions are much easier to treat effectively the earlier they are caught. X-rays can also be used to show if teeth are out of alignment.
Normally an X-ray is not taken every time you visit the dentist, but rather every few years. If you are more at risk of gum disease or other oral health conditions, your dentist may recommend receiving them more frequently. While there is radiation involved any time an X-ray is taken, modern dentistry has reduced the radiation exposure to very minimal levels.
