Untreated decay can develop throughout the tooth to the point that it reaches its center. The center of the tooth is where the blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves exist. If decay reaches this area, these elements will become inflamed, and cause serious pain and health complications.
A tooth infection can only be treated by a root canal treatment, which can be performed by our Agoura Hills dentist. There are three main steps of completing a root canal.
Step One: Opening the Tooth
Our dentist will first apply local anesthetic to the area, eliminating the possibility of feeling any pain during the treatment. They will then use a drill to create a hole in the affected tooth in order to access its center. The infected pulp will be removed from the main area and the canals.
Step Two: Replacing the Pulp
The tooth cannot remain hollow at all, so the removed pulp needs to be replaced. The tooth will be packed with a special dental material called gutta percha.
Step Three: Restoration
Due to the hole created in the tooth, it will need to be restored. Our dentist may decide to use a filling or crown, depending on the size of the alteration.
