How Often is a Dental X-Rays Recommended?

Dental X-rays allow a dentist to see parts of the teeth and underlying structures that cannot be seen with the unaided eye. This allows us to identify problems early before they lead to more serious problems. We may recommend dental X-rays for a variety of reasons.

You may need a dental X-ray if you:

  • Look for decay
  • Identify bone loss
  • Are planning to undergo orthodontic treatment, dental implants, root canal treatments or other procedures
  • Spot changes in the bone
  • Have cysts
  • Are scheduled to undergo a dental extraction or other surgical procedure
  • Reveal infections, abscesses or other potentially serious dental problems

Many dentists will also perform a baseline X-ray at your initial appointment and X-rays annually or every few years after that to spot any changes that have occurred over time. You may need more frequent dental X-rays if you are at high risk of decay, periodontal disease or other problems. In some cases, a 3D image may offer clearer results and may be used instead of a traditional X-ray.
