How is TMJ Diagnosed?

TMJ, referring to the temporomandibular joint, is a tricky disorder to deal with. Experts are not entirely sure why it occurs, but do know that it can be a result of physical accident, tooth grinding and clenching (bruxism), stress, arthritis, and more. Pain and discomfort in the jaw joint area occurs when the tissue becomes infected or damaged, and irritates the surrounding muscles and nerves.

Some common symptoms of TMJ include:

•             Clicking or grinding of the affected jaw joint
•             The jaw locking open or closed
•             Pain in the face, head, ear, jaw, teeth, and/or neck
•             Difficultly chewing
•             Tenderness in the jaw
•             Muscle spasms

Recounting these symptoms can help our San Francisco dentist to diagnose the disorder. Trying some simple remedies can also help determine the source of the pain and discomfort. Some basic treatments include stress reduction, relaxation techniques, light stretching, and physical therapy. More extensive treatments involve mouth guards and splints, as well as orthodontics to fix the alignment of the teeth. If these methods are unsuccessful, surgery may be necessary.
