How Does Dental Sedation Work?
Our staff understands that some patients are extremely nervous about visiting a dentist. Occasionally, the fear is so intense it prompts people not to schedule dental visits. Sometimes the fear comes from a concern about things that could happen and other times, it is an unplanned reaction to a memory trigger from your past. Regardless of the reason, we want you to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible for your procedure, so we may suggest dental sedation. You can be sure that this is a safe and normal option, and we always opt for the gentlest type that will suit your needs.
There are three different kinds of dental sedation we use in our practice:
1. NITROUS OXIDE- Also commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an inhaled form of sedation. Typically, patients remain conscious when receiving laughing gas. It does not contain pain-relieving medication, although some patients tell us they felt no pain. The main purpose of nitrous oxide is to promote calmness and feelings of relaxation in patients. Because it is a mild sedative, you awake easily without feelings of grogginess.
2. ORAL SEDATIVES- These are a bit stronger than laughing gas and usually come in pill form. Sometimes patients receive the tablets in the office, or the dentist can prescribe the medication for the patient to take prior to their appointment. Patients using oral sedatives are asleep during their dental procedures and wake with the sense that no time passed.
3. IV MEDICATION- Our dentist uses this kind of sedation for oral surgery. Our staff will insert a tiny tube into your vein; this will distribute the sedative throughout your body. You will be unconscious while receiving the medication and will need someone to drive you home after your dental procedure.
For some patients, knowing that dental sedation is an option helps them feel more at ease. If you would like more information about dental sedation, please contact our office; we are happy to assist you.
