How are Veneers Made?

So, you’ve decided to move forward with a set of dental veneers. Before getting started, it may interest you to know just how these things are made. While they may seem self-explanatory, there is quite a bit of work that goes into the construction of your new set of veneers.

To start, there are two different type of veneer at your disposal: porcelain veneers, and composite resin. Both are perfectly capable of solving your cosmetic dental issues, but they do boast slightly different advantages individually.  Porcelain veneers are durable and mimic the look of real teeth much more accurately than their composite resin counterparts; as such, they are a bit more expensive and may require more appointments to coordinate fully. Composite resin veneers are more easily repaired if damaged, and usually allow the dentist to remove less enamel than in the case of porcelain veneers. Both have their pros and cons, but at the end of the day, any type will be able to get the job done.

While your journey will not vary much in a rough sense between the two different options, the manufacturing of the veneers themselves will slightly. With a porcelain set, your dentist will gather information about your mouth, take measurements, and remove some of your enamel from the teeth you are looking to improve. You will not get the permanent veneers affixed to your teeth during this appointment; instead, your measurements will be sent to a dental lab where they will be customized to your case. Your dentist may give you a temporary veneer retainer to wear while this happens.

The turnaround time for a set of composite resin veneers is much faster, and in many situations can potentially only take a single appointment to have placed.  The teeth are prepared in-office, much like with porcelain veneers. Once your dentist has made their assessment, they will sculpt the material to match your mouth. The veneers are pressed on with a special adhesive and your dentist will harden it with a special light. After that, they will polish the veneers until they fully resemble a real set of teeth.
