How Are Inlays and Onlays Made?
Dental inlays and onlays are restorations that can be used to replace large metal fillings or to restore teeth with substantial areas of decay or damage. They are made using porcelain like dental crowns, but unlike dental crowns, they require less preparation, which makes them a more conservative option. Our Agoura Hills cosmetic dentist can help you decide if an inlay or onlay is right for you.
Porcelain inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit perfectly inside your prepared tooth. They are bonded securely to prevent further decay and to stabilize the tooth structure, which reduces the risk of additional damage. The restoration is durable and can last many years, with results that look completely natural.
If you are a candidate for an inlay or onlay, your tooth will first be prepared. Then, we will take a digital impression using a small handheld device. This image requires no sticky impression material, but instead takes a digital 3D image of your entire tooth and recreates it on our computer. Our dentist can manipulate the image and design your onlay or inlay using the measurements and specifications of your teeth. Finally, the design is sent to an onsite milling chamber, which creates the restoration out of porcelain. As soon as it has been made, it can be bonded to your tooth.
The entire process can be completed in just one appointment. Same day inlays and onlays offer you the fastest way to restore severely damaged teeth. Call our office to schedule your appointment with our dentist.
