Getting an Emergency Root Canal

A root canal is a procedure that is used to save the outer structure of a badly damaged tooth. The teeth have several layers, including the enamel and dentin, which form the outer structures, and the soft tissues, which are contained within the root canals of the tooth. Our emergency dentist may need to perform a root canal treatment if those soft tissues have become damaged or infected.

During this procedure, the soft tissues, including the nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissues, are removed. These tissues nourish the tooth while the tooth is developing, but they are not strictly necessary once the tooth is fully grown. Removing them eliminates the source of infection and disease, and allows the tooth to continue to function. You may need a root canal if you have an abscessed tooth, infection, a severely damaged tooth, or a cavity that has reached the pulp.

After an emergency root canal, your tooth will need to be permanently restored using a dental crown. This protects the tooth from re-infection and helps it stay strong. Most patients recover quickly and experience significant pain relief. Call our office today to learn more or to schedule an appointment with our team.
