Effectiveness of Machines for People with Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea treatment is advancing rapidly, and in a few years the whole model may be replaced. Pacemaker technology may soon make it easier than ever to regulate breathing in a permanent way. Until then, patients can rely on CPAP and its alternatives. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure, and is currently the go-to treatment for sleep apnea sufferers.

Unfortunately, CPAP is not for everyone. You have to wear the mask all night, and it can cause nasal congestion. If you’re prone to claustrophobia, you may not be able to wear it at all.

These extenuating factors may cause patients to complain to their sleep apnea doctor. If this happens, other machine therapies include BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure) which gives the patient a little more control over air intake. There’s also EPAP (expiratory positive airway pressure), which is a disposable device placed in the nostrils. When you exhale, the device holds your airway open.

Ultimately, effectiveness of sleep apnea oral machines may depend on you, your sleeping habits, and your personal touches. Ask your doctor for more information.
