Wisdom teeth are the final molars that erupt, and they often appear in a person’s late teens or early 20s. Most people have between one and four wisdom teeth. While some wisdom teeth erupt without incident, some can cause problems and may need to be extracted. Our Los Angeles dentist may recommend wisdom teeth extraction if:
• Your teeth will be crowded by your wisdom teeth.
• Your wisdom teeth erupt improperly, which can push other teeth out of alignment.
• A cyst develops around the wisdom tooth.
• You have chronic pain or an infection around your wisdom teeth.
• Your wisdom teeth are impacted.
We may recommend that all of your wisdom teeth be removed to reduce the risk of future problems. If they are not removed until later in life or after they begin to cause problems, the extraction process can be more complicated. However, each patient’s situation is unique, and our dentist will explain how many teeth will need to be removed and when the procedure should be performed. The extraction can usually be done in a single appointment, and complications are uncommon. You may need to rest for a day or two after the extraction and take it easy until the extraction site heals completely.
