Dental Problems You Should Tell Your Orthodontist

Undergoing orthodontic treatment in order to fix the alignment of your teeth is always a good idea. Not only will it be easier to chew your food and to smile for pictures, but it will also be easier to maintain better oral hygiene. If you have any dental problems before treatment, you should always be sure to tell your orthodontist.

If you are suffering from gum disease, it is definitely important to tell your orthodontist about it. Periodontal disease leads to the loss of tooth-supporting bone, and orthodontics can sometimes exacerbate this issue. Orthodontic treatment works by gently moving teeth within the bone that supports them, and if the bone is compromised, it can produce issues during treatment. That is why it is always a good idea to clear up any gum disease before going through treatment with our orthodontists in San Pedro.

You will also want to tell you orthodontist if you suffer from certain systemic conditions like diabetes. Diabetes can make it more difficult to heal and can also make periodontal disease worse. If the diabetes is under control, it may be a different story. Only an orthodontist will be able to say for sure. Other systemic conditions that you would want to mention are leukemia, bleeding disorders, and severe heart-valve disease.
