Dental Crowns Appearance

Dental crowns can be made of metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or porcelain. Crowns are used to strengthen teeth that have become weakened by injury or decay. They can also be used to improve the cosmetics of a tooth that is oddly shaped or stained.

It is important to note, though, that only porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-porcelain crowns can be used to cosmetically improve teeth. Metal crowns are highly visible, and while they are also highly durable and completely appropriate as a tooth restoration option, they are by no means aesthetically pleasing. For that matter, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are inferior to all porcelain crowns, as the metal can peak out of the bottom of the crown if gum recession occurs around a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. Furthermore, some people do have a sensitivity to the nickel that is used in metal crowns and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, so porcelain is usually the recommended restoration option nowadays.

Part of the reason that porcelain is the best option is because it can be made to match the color of your surrounding natural teeth. Another reason is that porcelain absorbs and reflects light in much the same way as our natural teeth.
