Cleaning Ceramic Braces

As ceramic braces continue to rise in popularity, our cosmetic dentist and our orthodontist receive more questions about their care and the cleaning. Many patients express concern that their braces will stain faster than metal braces. While the ceramic brackets are designed to resist staining in the same way that a ceramic mug resists stains, it is important to note that just like a ceramic mug, the brackets will stain without proper and frequent cleaning. Additionally, the surface of your teeth surrounding your braces is susceptible to staining which will cause uneven coloring of your teeth when we remove the braces. It is crucial that you practice good dental hygiene while you have your braces. We have some tips designed to help you keep your ceramic braces (and your teeth) clean and healthy.
• It is essential to your oral health to maintain, or begin, a daily oral care routine once you have your braces. To prevent decay and to keep your ceramic braces and teeth as clean as possible thoroughly brush your teeth a minimum of twice a day. Ideally, brushing after each meal is the best option to maintain stain-free brackets and teeth.
• Take the time to carefully floss your teeth twice a day, or more often if possible. If this is difficult for you to accomplish, do not give up. Please ask one of our staff members for tips or different kinds of flossing devices. Flossing is an essential part of caring for your braces and your teeth.
• Use a fluoride mouth rinse to protect all areas of your mouth. Many of our patients prefer a mouth rinse which also whitens their teeth. Using a whitening mouth rinse is a good idea particularly if you use tobacco products or you consume dark or colorful food, such as curry.
Once thoroughly cleaning your ceramic braces becomes a habit, you will find that it takes very little time. Should you have any questions or concerns, remember that we are here to help your road to a perfect smile be as smooth as possible.
