Braces and How They Work

Braces work on a very simple premise that has been proven for decades to work wonders. There are three primary parts of braces: the bands, the brackets, and the arch wire. The bands are the first thing to get attached to the teeth, going on the back molars on both sides. If you are getting braces on both top and bottom jaws, you will have four bands. These act as the primary support for the braces.

Next, orthodontists will cement the brackets onto the teeth. Every tooth will receive one, except under certain circumstances.

Once those are attached, the arch wire is placed. The arch wire is what gets changed and tweaked by the dentist at each appointment. Because it is connected to the bands and each bracket, the arch wire is what pulls the teeth from one location to another. This is done by tightening the wire in different places.

This action slowly pulls the teeth along the jaw sockets and the gums. Knowing how teeth move in the mouth is part of the specialized training of an orthodontist.
