Are Braces a Good Option for Adults?

Even though more adult patients get orthodontic care than ever, many of our patients here at our office see a teenager with a mouth full of metal when they think of braces. Our San Francisco dentist knows that braces and other orthodontic measures are excellent options for adult patients.

About two decades ago, adults getting braces made up approximately 1% of orthodontic patients. Now closer to 50% of our orthodontic patients are over the age of 18.

Our braces dentist in San Francisco believes the rise in adult braces is due, in part, to the greater variety of discreet orthodontic options. When a patient visits our office to learn about options for braces, they are often surprised by the choices that are hardly noticeable.

• WIRED BRACES- We offer traditional wired braces for patients of all ages. These work well and correct various orthodontic conditions. However, this generation of wired braces is smaller, less painful, and much less noticeable than braces worn ten years ago.

• CLEAR OR CERAMIC BRACES- This type of treatment works just as wired braced do, except the brackets, wired and elastic bands are all either transparent or tooth-colored. These are a popular option with our patients who prefer braces to be as unnoticeable as possible.

• INVISALIGN- While the Invisalign system is not the same as braces, patients get similar results when using the alignment trays. Many dental professionals believe that Invisalign is responsible, in part, for the sharp increase of adults seeking orthodontic care. In addition to the transparent system of trays being nearly impossible to see when worn, Invisalign also eliminates other aspects of wearing braces patients found annoying. Because the trays must not be in while a patient eats or drinks, there are almost no food restrictions. Invisalign does not require adjusting, so patients do not experience uncomfortable wire tightening.
